Substrate and Topsoil Impact on Soil Water and Soil Temperature in Arctic Diamond Mine Reclamation

چکیده
Soil properties in the Arctic are insufficiently explored and documented, particularly extensive monitoring of soil water temperature over a period time. critical for understanding land surface atmosphere interactions considered key factors revegetation during mine reclamation. This study assessed how substrate topsoil influenced content at reclaimed diamond Northwest Territories Canada. Three substrates (crushed rock, processed kimberlite, lake sediment) with without were used. Mean air changed little from year to year, although summer showed slightly increasing trend. Both annual precipitation sharply declined was more by than placing 10 cm on it. Processed kimberlite had greater retention characteristics sediment crushed rock (significantly). Surface lower topsoil, suggesting that not enough influence temperatures either or topsoil. suggests could be used as component management reclamation this extreme environment.

متن کاملSodic soil reclamation: Modelling and field study
Reclamation of sodic soils has traditionally been undertaken using calculation of gypsum or Ca requirement assuming 100% exchange efficiency and neglect of the contribution of calcium carbonate in the profile. The UNSATCHEM model is reviewed and then evaluated for its ability to predict field reclamation of a sodic saline soil. The 40-ha field site was initially at an electrical conductivity (E...
متن کاملFire and grazing effects on wind erosion, soil water content, and soil temperature.
Selective grazing of burned patches can be intense if animal distribution is not controlled and may compound the independent effects of fire and grazing on soil characteristics. Our objectives were to quantify the effects of patch burning and grazing on wind erosion, soil water content, and soil temperature in sand sagebrush (Artemisia filifolia Torr.) mixed prairie. We selected 24, 4-ha plots ...
متن کاملBiochar for soil remediation and land reclamation
Land reclamation generally relates to the improvement of soils degraded by human activities, for example construction and certain forms of agriculture. Soil remediation refers to the process of removing, neutralizing or reducing the toxicity of certain compounds, often left by human activities such as mining and industry. Each degraded and/or contaminated site is potentially unique in its chara...
متن کاملTree-Substrate Water Relations and Root Development in Tree Plantations Used for Mine Tailings Reclamation.
Tree water uptake relies on well-developed root systems. However, mine wastes can restrict root growth, in particular metalliferous mill tailings, which consist of the finely crushed ore that remains after valuable metals are removed. Thus, water stress could limit plantation success in reclaimed mine lands. This study evaluates the effect of substrates varying in quality (topsoil, overburden, ...
